How Tru Identity Supports Section 232

Section 232 is arguably the single most complicated part of trade compliance today. To get it right you have to understand the materials in a product, the percentage of weight those materials make up, the value in certain cases, the intended use, and more. All of these interact with each other to determine the correct 99 codes on your entry filing, and in turn, the duty rate paid to US Customs.

Tru makes Section 232 simple.

We reduce the complexity of getting to the right 99s for you and your clients. You shouldn't have to memorize every eight-digit code, the order they stack in, when each one applies, and how they interact with one another.

What you actually need to know are the concepts behind Section 232. Those come down to simple questions about a product, like:

  1. Is this product used in a car?
  2. Does it contain steel?
  3. What's the weight of the metal in the product?
  4. What country was the steel melted and poured in?

Even someone without deep trade compliance knowledge can answer questions like these about their products. That's far more intuitive than rattling off eight-digit sequences that change every few months.

How it works

First, we tell you if Section 232 even applies. If it does, we tell you the specific materials or end uses that matter for that specific HTS code. The old question to identify this was "what's this product made out of?" The new question is "does it contain steel?" A more targeted, yes or no question.

Once you know what applies to this product, you fill in the inputs that matter. Does your product contain steel? If yes, then provide the percentage weight of the steel. Answer these questions, Tru's compliance engine understands the product, then returns the correct 99 codes.

The output is fully dynamic. Change an input and the codes adapt using Tru's conditional logic. No more paying both an automotive and a steel tariff on the same product. In total, Tru factors 26 different variables to calculate your 99s.

Most importantly, you can capture this intelligence one product at a time, or 100,000 products at a time. Tru Identity is a fully scalable compliance solution.

Responsible use of AI and automation

Some things should never use AI, and calculating 99s is one of them. In trade compliance there's usually one correct answer, so you need a system that gives you reliably repeatable output.

Ask generic AI the same question ten times and you may get three or four different answers over the course of those responses. That's unacceptable in global trade where compliance is paramount.

Tru Identity never uses AI to calculate 99s. Our output comes from formal CBP guidance, interpreted and maintained by our team of licensed customs brokers and trade compliance experts.

No AI. Consistent output, every time.
